The History

Lemonsjø Fjellstu & Hyttegren is a family business, owned and run by the Furuset family since 1978. A long time which to own and run their own place brought the family from the Oslo region to this pearl in the Norwegian mountains.

The mountain lodges was originally founded and first build in 1958 to accommodate travelers and tourist in this picturesque part of our country. It consisted at the time of 10 rooms and a café with 40 seats. The place was run in this state more or less until the family Furuset bought the place in 1978.

Since that time, the main building has been renovated and upgraded through several stages. The café and the salon, which includes a traditional fireplace, has today significantly larger capacity. The rooms have been combined to 4 units with all facilities expected by the modern traveler. And the latest addition is a modern kitchen that was completed to the Easter season 2007.

10 modern and comfortable cabins were added in 1985. Again, these have got a newly renovated kitchen in 2005.

In conjunction with renovation and maintenance, we pride our self in keeping our facilities clean and appealing at all times. Our guest’s regularly comments on this fact!

Many tourists and travelers have visited Lemonsjø Fjellstue & Hyttegrend, some once, some regularly. We appreciate this and hope to see you again soon. This is why we are here!

The Name

We are often asked about the meaning of Lemonsjø…”Sjø in Norwegian is a lake, which is the beautiful lake we are situated next to. But what about Lemon?...

We found two explanations, you choose...

Historical explanation, extracted and freely translated from “Trond O. Haug : Stadsnamn frå Vågå”, book about places in the region Vågå.

It has been found long back in time, suggestively 1349, that a special fishing method was used in the northern shores of the lake, where a river leads the freshwater out and down. This method entails using barriers made of wood to trap the fish, preventing it from going down the river and thereby being able to chatch it. The old name of these barriers is in Norwegian called “lem” and therefore the name Lemon.

And the one about the lemon…

About 200 years ago a Briton named Sir Sun Kis travelled over the mountains of Norway and arrived at the beautiful lake. He rented a summer farm and brought with him a horse load of lemons. Sir Sun Kis was not into alcoholic drinks and only enjoyed a warm or chilled lemon juice.

When he left for winter, lemons where left over. The juice from this fruits found the way into the lake and you can still today enjoy this fresh water from the Lemon lake!

Environment

Lemonsjø Fjellstue & Hyttegrend was granted, among the first businesses in the region, a certificate for environmentally friendly operation in 2006.

This entails requirements for operation of the business and working environment, which has all been satisfied. However, a continuous attention to the way we operate is in place and we strive to always improve.
